Xie Yuan
I’m Very Happy After Marrying the CEO Husband According to the AgreementXie Yuan is a former friend of Gu Huaian and the older brother of Xie Xuan, introduced as an apparently unapproachable man whose perpetual smile softens his narrow, phoenix-like eyes. His decisive narrative function is that of a compromised intermediary. He brings Shen Tang and Gu Qing'an out of danger, but the rescue also reveals that his methods are coercive, secretive, and entangled with his sister’s attempt to deceive Gu Huaian. Through him, protection and threat become indistinguishable: the same figure who can mobilize the police has also been monitoring the captives and helping sustain a false relationship.
Identity and First Impression
Xie Yuan appears among the police officers who arrive after Shen Tang and Gu Qing'an have been held captive. His civilian clothing distinguishes him from the uniformed rescuers, while his facial features make him seem difficult to approach; the habitual smile keeps that severity from becoming absolute. He walks directly toward Shen Tang and Gu Qing'an and addresses them as sister and sister-in-law, an immediate sign that he knows Gu Huaian’s family structure and regards himself as close enough to enter it.
Shen Tang does not recognize him at first. Gu Qing'an, however, responds calmly and confirms that they have not seen one another for a long time. During the journey, Shen Tang learns that the man is Xie Yuan and forms a poor first impression, judging him less favorably than Cen Songbai and Fu Junsheng. Her unease is not merely personal dislike. She suspects that Xie Yuan may have caused the earlier misunderstanding between her and Gu Huaian, so his presence carries unresolved relational consequences before his conduct is fully explained.
Rescue and Hidden Methods
Xie Yuan is connected to the rescue because he knows where Shen Tang and Gu Qing'an are and brings the police to them. Shen Tang directly asks how he found them and why he involved the police, while Gu Qing'an also waits for an answer. The question matters because Xie Yuan’s knowledge is too precise to be treated as coincidence: he has not simply encountered the two women after the fact but has been following the situation closely enough to arrange their recovery.
The explanation becomes more complicated when Xie Yuan tells them that Gu Huaian fell from a cliff in the mountains and was rescued by hikers. The fall caused a head injury and temporary memory loss. During that brief amnesia, Xie Xuan took the opportunity to tell Gu Huaian that she was his girlfriend, relying on his confusion to support a claim that was untrue. Xie Yuan is therefore tied to the background of the deception even though the lie originates with Xie Xuan.
Gu Huaian later explains that the blood clot caused by the head injury compressed part of his brain, but that his memory returned quickly and he never genuinely accepted Xie Xuan’s story. This clarification limits the success of Xie Yuan’s apparent scheme: the amnesia creates a moment of vulnerability, but it does not permanently rewrite Gu Huaian’s understanding of his marriage or his relationship with Shen Tang.
Conflict with Gu Huaian and Xie Xuan
When Shen Tang asks why Xie Yuan is still monitoring her and Gu Qing'an, Gu Huaian reacts with anger. Xie Yuan had been instructed merely to bring them over properly, yet he had done much more than that. Gu Huaian apologizes for the fear caused by the arrangement and acknowledges that Xie Yuan’s behavior was wrong, adding that Xie Yuan operates in the underworld and that his methods may be unusually severe. The statement defines Xie Yuan through a contradiction: his usefulness rests on access to force and hidden networks, but those same resources make his help frightening and difficult to control.
The confrontation sharpens when Xie Xuan enters and calls for him. She throws herself into his arms and asks whether Shen Tang really is Gu Huaian’s wife. Xie Yuan confirms that the marriage is genuine. Xie Xuan then begins to reveal that he had promised to help her, but Xie Yuan covers her mouth before she can finish. Gu Huaian immediately demands to know what he had agreed to help her do and warns him not to touch Shen Tang. Xie Yuan responds that he did not touch her, attempting to distinguish physical contact from the broader manipulation and surveillance surrounding the incident.
That distinction does not clear him. Xie Yuan’s conduct shows that he has participated in a family-centered concealment whose purpose is to protect Xie Xuan’s hope or deception at Shen Tang’s expense. His intervention is less an open attack than an exercise in control: information is withheld, movement is monitored, and a vulnerable man’s memory is treated as an opportunity. The rescue thus becomes an exposure of complicity rather than a simple act of deliverance.
Limits of His Control and Later Consequences
Xie Yuan cannot fully control Xie Xuan once the truth is spoken. She clings to Shen Tang, apparently still afraid of her brother, and announces that she will sneak away before returning another time. She leaves the house carrying her bag, but within less than a minute her shrill screams can be heard outside. The episode punctures the authority suggested by Xie Yuan’s calm smile and underworld reputation. He can arrange surveillance and bring police to a location, yet he cannot prevent Xie Xuan’s behavior from becoming visible or stop the consequences from reaching her.
Gu Huaian’s direct response is equally important. He coldly tells someone on the telephone that there are three minutes to take Xie Xuan away. When the person on the other end asks what happened to her, he offers no explanation and hangs up. Xie Xuan accuses him of reporting her, making clear that Gu Huaian has shifted from being the object of her manipulation to the person enforcing a boundary. Xie Yuan’s role in that reversal is indirect but essential: his intervention exposes the lie, and the exposed lie enables Gu Huaian to reject both Xie Xuan’s claim and Xie Yuan’s methods.
Character Function and Significance
Xie Yuan is not presented as a straightforward villain or dependable ally. He is the person who can produce a rescue because he possesses connections beyond the ordinary social sphere, yet those connections also produce fear, misunderstanding, and unauthorized coercion. His perpetual smile over an intimidating expression visually captures this double role: apparent courtesy overlays an atmosphere of threat.
His relationship with Gu Huaian is marked by former friendship and present conflict. Gu Huaian trusts him enough to assign a task, but not enough to excuse what Xie Yuan does beyond that task. Their disagreement also establishes that past intimacy does not erase accountability. Xie Yuan may call Shen Tang sister-in-law and move within Gu Huaian’s circle, but his actions place him outside the moral security that such familial language implies.
His relationship with Xie Xuan is more protective and more damaging. He intervenes when she is about to expose their arrangement, and he appears to have helped preserve her false position during Gu Huaian’s memory loss. Yet this protection ultimately fails, leaving Xie Xuan humiliated and removed. Xie Yuan’s narrative importance lies precisely in that failure: he represents the dangerous belief that affection or family loyalty can justify controlling other people’s knowledge, choices, and freedom. The rescue saves Shen Tang and Gu Qing'an, but the events surrounding it ensure that Xie Yuan remains associated with both deliverance and menace.
